"Masks... that thin extra skin we wear, a shield between danger and safety, the self and the world, the truth and the lie."
- L.A. Hawbaker, Editor's Letter, Spring '21
I'm the Managing Editor (i.e. second-in-command) of MASKS Literary Magazine. We're a biannual literary arts publication for emerging writers and visual artists. We understand the challenges of trying to develop and sustain a creative practice in the modern world, and have founded our magazine with the express goal of giving new writers a platform and payment for their work.
Much of the work published in our inaugural two issues has been from artists and writers who identify as BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, women, disabled, multilingual, and other marginalized and underrepresented communities. MASKS provides a space for individual artistic development with the larger goal of fostering literary thinking in our culture. We bring global, international stories to an English-speaking audience.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Miya Turnbull, our phenomenally talented featured artist, for the fall 2021 issue, which you can read in full here.
